EAGLES Vick unlikely for Sunday

It was another Monday without a starting quarterback for the Eagles. For the fourth consecutive week, coach Chip Kelly could not definitively say who his quarterback would be.

This is what Kelly would say: Michael Vick underwent an MRI exam on his strained left hamstring and Nick Foles was undergoing tests on his concussion, including the Im-PACT test.

Kelly said it’s unlikely that Vick will play Sunday against the Oakland Raiders, but he did not know the status of Foles. General Manager Howie Roseman said the Eagles would have a better idea of Foles’ status today.

After Foles passes the ImPACT test, the baseline measurement of cognitive function, an independent neurologist must clear him before he can resume practice. The Eagles will begin practicing for the Raiders game on Tuesday. If Vick and Foles are absent, rookie Matt Barkley will take the first-team snaps in practice.

“When I get all the information on the health of our quarterbacks, I’ll tell you who our starting quarterback is going to be,” Kelly said. “If Nick is notcleared, that’s another discussion we have to have.”

If Vick and Foles are out, the Eagles would need to find a backup quarterback. On their practice squad is G.J. Kinne, who spent the offseason with the team but has never played in a regular-season game.

Barkley has completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 287 yards in just over three quarters this season. He has four interceptions and one lost fumble. That fumble came at the end of the first half in Sunday’s 15-7 loss to the Giants with the Eagles close to scoring.

RAIDERS Tarver apologizes

ALAMEDA, Calif. - Raiders defensive coordinator Jason Tarver apologized Monday for making an obscene gesture toward an NFL official, and the club said any discipline would be handled internally.

When cornerback Mike Jenkins broke up a pass intended for Pittsburgh running back La’Veon Bell in the third quarter Sunday in a 21-18 victory by the Raiders, Tarver protested a penalty for a hit on a defenseless receiver.

A film clip caught Tarver twice giving an obscene gesture and appearing to deliver a matching expletive. The flag was picked up when a second official said there was no foul.

In a statement released by the team, Tarver said, “I apologize for my action on the sideline of yesterday’s game. It was in the heat of the moment, and I regret drawing attention away from the Raiders players and what theyaccomplished.”

Raiders Coach Dennis Allen referred to Tarver’s apology when asked about the incident at his weekly news conference and added, “The only thing I’ll say is I think he’s done an outstanding job with our defense. I think he’s a fiery and emotional guy, and our players have really taken to that. I think they’ve embraced that type of attitude, and he has the defense playing at high level right now.”

Raiders owner Mark Davis told ESPN.com, “It was an emotional outburst by a coach in the heat of a game. We don’t condone those actions, and we’ll handle it in-house.”

Former NFL director of officials Mike Pereira wrote on his Fox Sports blog that he contacted the league office regarding the incident and anticipated Tarver would receive a fine.JETS

Nelson: Pacman wrong

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - New York Jets wide receiver David Nelson denies the claim he’s a “dirty” player made by Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones, saying that’s “inaccurate and untrue.”

Nelson and Jones had a few tense moments during the Bengals’ 49-9 victory Sunday, including a hit by the Jets receiver late in the third quarter that angered the cornerback. Nelson was penalized for clipping, and an angry Jones had to be restrained as he ran toward him.

Jones told the Bengals’ website that Nelson was “playing dirty,” and said there were three “cheap shots” in the game. The Daily News also reported that Jones told Nelson he would find out where he lives “and come and get you.”

Nelson wouldn’t detail his conversations with Jones, but confirmed that published reports were accurate.COWBOYS Arkin signed

IRVING, Texas - The Cowboys have signed guard David Arkin to their practice squad two days after releasing him to create a roster spot for a safety.

Arkin is a fourth-round pick from 2011 who hasn’t played in a game for Dallas. He was inactive for six consecutive games before his release.

Coach Jason Garrett said the Cowboys wanted to keep Arkin, so they made the roster move late last week to try to get him through waivers.

Starting guard Brian Waters sustained rib, knee and triceps injuries in Sunday’s 31-30 loss to Detroit. Garrett said Monday the triceps injury was the biggest concern.
