Police investigate death of inmate

Law enforcement officials are investigating the Saturday death of an inmate at the Sebastian County jail in Fort Smith.

The Arkansas State Police is investigating the death of Mike Casey, 41, of Fort Smith, who was being held at the facility on an Arkansas Department of Correction “commitment hold,” which means he was scheduled to be transferred to another facility to serve the majority of his sentence.

The Sebastian County sheriff’s office is also conducting an internal investigation of the death, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Casey pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of driving while intoxicated and violation of a suspended sentence. In December 2012, Casey pleaded guilty to third-degree domestic battery, second offense, according to the Sebastian County prosecutor’s office.

According to the release, deputies at the facility responded to an emergency medical call about 2:30 p.m. Saturday and began performing CPR on Casey. Emergency medical services personnel transported Casey to Sparks Health System, where he was later pronounced dead.

The investigations by both the state police and the Sebastian County sheriff’s office are ongoing, according to the release.
