$1 million UAMS gift funds new cancer post

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has received a $1 million-donation to help fund cancer research and honor a longtime physician.

The donation, given to the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, will establish the Laura F. Hutchins, M.D. Distinguished Chair for the Hematology/Oncology Division. Proceeds from the institute’s 2012 Gala for Life fundraiser and private donations provided about $500,000 in additional funding.

An endowed distinguished chair is established with gifts of at least $1.5 million. The chair holder, to be named later, will use endowment earnings for research, teaching or service activities.

After she graduated from the UAMS College of Medicine, Hutchins completed her internship, residency and a fellowship in hematology/oncology at UAMS. She joined the UAMS College of Medicine faculty in 1983.

She holds the Virginia Clinton Kelley Endowed Chair for Clinical Breast Cancer Research and is a professor in the College of Medicine’s Hematology/ Oncology Division.

Since 1998, she has served as director of clinical research at the cancer institute.
