Benton man accused of punching officer, assaulting woman

A Benton man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after, police say, he punched an officer who was investigating a reported assault.

Brandon Cockrell, 29, was taken into custody after officers were called to a report of a disturbance with a weapon on Sunset Drive, according to a news release from the Benton Police Department. A woman met authorities and told them that a man, later determined to be Cockrell, had beaten her and had a gun with him.

During the investigation, Cockrell hit one of the officers and was immediately taken into custody, police said. Investigators determined that the purported events had taken place, and a shotgun was found on the premises, according to police. The release states that the officer who was struck did not require medical attention.

Cockrell was charged with aggravated assault, third-degree domestic battery and second-degree battery, the release states. Police said additional charges are possible.
