Slim Pickings

WHAT: Greek cream cheese/yogurt

STATS: Vary by brand. A serving (two tablespoons) of Kroger’s Greek Cream Cheese & Greek Yogurt contains 80 calories, no fiber and 3 fat, 3 carbohydrate and 4 protein grams. We bought it at Kroger, 8415 W. Markham St., Little Rock.

THE SKINNY: Here’s a trick you can play this Halloween to save calories for treats.

Swap a Greek yogurt-based cream cheese for regular cream cheese (a 40-calories-per-serving savings) or even the light cream cheese (10 calories per serving savings). Several companies produce it.

We picked up a brick of the inexpensive Kroger brand Greek Cream Cheese & Greek Yogurt and were pleased to find the texture and the taste (no sourness) quite similar to regular. While we didn’t test its bakeability, we can say it melts well - it performed perfectly in batch of Pioneer Woman’s Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Thingies (recipe at tinyurl.com/5tlz8f).
