FORT SMITH — The Walton Family Foundation has awarded $1 million to Fort Smith to build a walking trail along the Arkansas River.
City officials say the grant will be used to build a 2-mile section of the River West Trail from River Park to the existing Rice Carden Levee Trail. Mayor Sandy Sanders says that once the trail is built, the city will have a continuous public trail of 5 miles between the Fort Smith National Historic Site and the north bend of the Arkansas River.
The city is contributing an additional $1 million to the project.
Construction is expected to begin within the next six months with completion scheduled for 2015.
