•–––––JAMES EDWARD “JIM” SPENCER, 80, of Little Rock died Monday night, Oct. 28, 2013. Born in Batesville during the Depression to James O. Spencer and Elizabeth Snapp, Jim sold newspapers in the Heights before school and attended Forest Park Grammar School, attaining the office of president of the sixth-grade class. Throwing all those newspapers helped Jim develop a strong left arm – an arm that would propel him into prominence on the pitcher’s mound.

After starring for the Newport football and baseball teams, Jim went to Oklahoma A&M on a baseball scholarship. After his freshman year, he signed a contract with the Braves organization and earned a reputation as a blazing reliever in Corpus Christie, Quebec, Jacksonville and Atlanta. He also earned the nickname “Sweetroll Spencer” after a sportswriter caught him with a big bag of bakery goods in the bullpen. Career highlight: striking out Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews and Del Crandall one inning in an exhibition game against the Milwaukee Braves.

In the off-season, Jim attended the University of Arkansas and pledged Kappa Sigma. After graduation, he retired from baseball, married Kay Terry, started a family and began selling life insurance. He helped pioneer the concept of “association insurance” and soon became a much in-demand consultant to insurance companies all across the U.S.

Spencer served on the Newport School Board and the board of Merchants and Planters Bank. Jim helped Bill Alexander in his first race for Congress and was one of Dale Bumpers’ first county chairmen. He rose to the highest ranks of amateur golfers in Arkansas, enjoying the social aspects of the game as much as the sport of it. After he wore out his original hips, he switched to gin rummy, becoming a fixture at Pleasant Valley Country Club.

He is survived by Kay; his sons, Steve and Jimmy; and daughter, Elizabeth; his daughter-in-law, Angie; and grandson and granddaughter, Sam and Addie.

A memorial service will be held at Pleasant Valley Country Club, 1 Pleasant Valley Drive in Little Rock on Friday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. The Rev. J. Russell Snapp will be presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to: Junior Deputy Baseball, P.O. Box 250709, Little Rock, Ark. 72225-0709. P: (501) 372-7640.

•–––––Our former provincial, and esteemed brother, Father CHRISTOPHER TIMONEY OCD of Little Rock died Monday afternoon, Oct. 28, 2012, in San Antonio, Texas. Born on May 30, 1935, to Michael and Anna Baker Timoney in Philadelphia, Pa., he was christened five weeks later as John Francis Joseph Timoney in Francis Xavier Church. He entered our new Carmelite seminary in Dallas on Oct. 7, 1951, and received the Carmelite habit at Marylake, Ark., with his classmate Henry Bordeaux on July 15, 1954, taking the name Christopher of the Immaculate Conception, O.C.D.

Christopher took his vows on July 16, 1955, and was sent to study at Assumption Seminary in San Antonio. He was ordained a priest on May 26, 1962, and sent to Conception Abbey in Missouri for a summer pastoral course in June. His first assignment was at our Marylake Novitiate from September ’62 to February ’63, when Fr. Raymond sent him to Houston for two years. He was then named superior of Mount Carmel in Dallas for six years, during which time it was run as an interprovincial seminary for candidates from the Oklahoma and Washington provinces.

In 1972, Herman named him prior and pastor in San Antonio, and the chapter of 1975 elected him provincial. In 1978, he returned to San Antonio, and in 1981, he was stationed at Santa Maria in Dallas under Thomas. In 1984, Ralph named him superior of Santa Maria, but moved him at Thanksgiving of 1986 to San Antonio to be the director of students. Father suffered a huge stoke on April 9, 1987. Although physically incapacitated, Father continued a ministry of spiritual direction and confessor to bishops of the archdiocese for 15 years at our monastery after the stroke. In 2002, he needed the assistance of St. Francis Home, where he died Monday afternoon around 1:25 p.m.

A Mass for All Saints Day will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at the Monastery of Marylake, 5151 Marylake Drive, Little Rock, Ark. 72206 followed by a burial rite for Fr. Christopher at Marylake Cemetery. To sign the online guestbook, go to www.giffinleggetthealeyroth. com.
