Second thoughts

Vonn knows way around a golf course

Move over, Tiger Woods.

During a recent interview with talk show host David Letterman, world-class skier Lindsey Vonn indicated that she possesses some on-course ability that may rival that of her boyfriend, who is currently the world’s No. 1 golfer.

“I have a hole-in-one. I’m pretty proud of that,” said Vonn, who is returning to competitive skiing in time for the Sochi Olympics in February. “My first round of 18 holes, I had one. It didn’t bounce off a tree or anything and go in the hole, it was pretty legitimate.”

Vonn also shared details during the interview about how she and Woods met and told Letterman that the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year has tried his hand at her sport as well.

“He’s good [at skiing]. He always wants to improve,” she said.

“Compared to me though, he’s not that good.”

Taunting changes?

When Seattle Seahawks receiver Golden Tate began waving at St. Louis Rams safety Rodney McLeod at the 25-yard line on his way to an 80-yard touchdown Monday night, an official threw a flag before Tate had even crossed the goal line.

Even though Tate committed a penalty before he scored, the touchdown still counted. But if a player does the same thing next season it may negate his touchdown.

NFL head of officiating Dean Blandino said on NFL Network that he thinks the Competition Committee will explore changing the NFL’s taunting rules to make them more similar to the taunting rules in the NCAA. In college football, if a player commits a taunting penalty on a touchdown, the touchdown is called back and the 15-yard penalty is enforced from the spot where the taunting began.

“A lot of people felt that the touchdown shouldn’t have counted [but] a taunting foul is always treated as a dead-ball foul, meaning whatever happened during the play counts and the foul is enforced on the next play, which would be the kickoff,” Blandino said. “In college, this action would take back the touchdown. Tate started taunting at the 25-yard line. The college rule, that’s enforced at the spot of the foul, so they’d go from a touchdown to first-and-10 at the 40, which would be a gigantic penalty. The NFL rule, it’s a dead-ball foul, it’s enforced on the kickoff. But I’m sure that’s something that the Competition Committee will look at in the off season.”

Taking away a touchdown for taunting seems awfully harsh.

Then again, there is a simple way to avoid that from happening.

Don’t taunt.

Next, please

The New York Giants may not stand pat as they embark on their bye week with two consecutive victories.

According to league source, a whopping 20 players visited the Giants for tryouts Tuesday.

The Giants may have just been kicking the tires in order to update their “ready list” at various positions for future reference.

Then again, maybe they wanted to remind the current 53 players on a 2-6 team that plenty of other guys are out there who would kill for their jobs.
