A North Little Rock man is accused of trying to steal more than $1,350 worth of clothing from a local department store to trade for drugs, police said.
Derrick Johnson, 36, was arrested about 3:40 p.m. Monday at the Dillard's in Park Plaza Mall in Little Rock. He remained in the Pulaski County jail Tuesday morning on a charge of felony theft of property.
According to a Pulaski County sheriff's office report, security at the store spotted Johnson concealing merchandise in a J.C. Penney bag and alerted an off-duty deputy.
The deputy then arrested Johnson and took him to a back security room.
"Subject stated he was stealing clothes to trade for 'crack,'" the deputy wrote in the report.
The total merchandise taken was valued at $1,354.87, the report said.
Johnson has a court date scheduled for Oct. 1.
