Just days after announcing he would resign from his post effective Oct. 1, Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington rescinded that resignation. One day later, Saline County Judge Lanny Fite has asked Pennington to step down now.
Fite's office released a letter sent to Pennington on Tuesday morning asking Pennington to resign immediately.
"At this point, your personal problems are preventing you from impartially performing your officials duties," Fite wrote. "Therefore, I strongly urge you to resign as the Sheriff of Saline County immediately."
Pennington, who was arrested June 29 outside Denton's Trot Line in Benton after patrons reported an intoxicated man entering his vehicle, submitted his resignation on Aug. 30. The resignation came four days after he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor alcohol charges in Saline County court.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette previously reported the Saline County Quorum Court announced they will hold a special meeting at 8 p.m. Tuesday regarding Pennington's decision.
