Two Benton police officers have been cleared to return to full, active duty after a car chase and shootout in July that led to the driver's death, authorities said on Monday.
The incident occurred July 30 on Interstate 30 in Little Rock, the Benton Police department said in a statement.
Clifford Jones, 29, fled from officers after they attempted to stop his vehicle, according to a news release. Jones led officers in a car chase and started to shoot at them after they used Stop Sticks to deflate his tires.
As a result, officers returned fire and Jones' vehicle veered off onto a grass median, where it came to a stop against a concrete barrier, the department said.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation by the department's Internal Affairs Division cleared the officers in the case, and an independent review by the Saline County prosecutor's office said the officers were justified in shooting at Jones, the release states.
The officers' names have not been released, because they work in the department's special investigative unit, the department said.
