'Significant' jobs announcement set for Fort Smith

A job creation announcement is set for Fort Smith this week, officials said Monday.

The Arkansas Economic Development Commission said Gov. Mike Beebe would help unveil details on the new jobs at an event Tuesday.

Joe Holmes, a spokesman for the commission, declined to say how many jobs would be added, but he described it as a "significant" announcement.

Holmes said he couldn't name the company involved, but said it was a new firm locating in Fort Smith and not an expansion of an existing company.

The announcement is set for 10 a.m. at the Fort Smith Regional Chamber of Commerce.

A woman who answered the phone there Monday said no details could be released before the formal announcement.

Mayor Sandy Sanders said he also couldn't comment before the announcement.

Beebe on Tuesday was also scheduled to address the Northwest Arkansas Political Animals Club in Fayetteville and participate in the Arkansas Advanced Initiative for Math & Science Awards Assembly in Prairie Grove.
