Memorials planned in Arkansas for 9/11 anniversary

Wednesday marks the 12th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City; Washington, D.C.; and western Pennsylvania, and several places around the state will hold events and ceremonies to commemorate the day, now known as Patriot Day.

The United States and Arkansas flags will fly at half-staff at the state Capitol and at all state-owned buildings from sunrise to sunset Wednesday, according to a proclamation by Gov. Mike Beebe.

The University of Central Arkansas in Conway will exhibit on campus a collection of materials related to the Sept. 11 attacks, the school said in a statement. The artifacts will include newspapers and official comments from Arkansas' congressional delegation in 2001, and letters from New York City students. The exhibit will be open at the UCA Archives from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday on the first floor of the Torreyson Library.

In Magnolia, the University of Southern Arkansa has announced it will conduct a memorial for those lost in the attacks. The service will occur from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday in front of the Harton Theatre. The school will also take contributions to the Southern Christian Mission at the event.
