Traffic is moving slowly on Interstates 40 and 430 and Arkansas 365 between Little Rock and Mayflower following at least four accidents that occurred in both directions on I-40 Friday afternoon, Arkansas State Police dispatchers said.

Both I-40 westbound lanes between Maumelle and Mayflower were closed for about two hours following the accidents, authorities said. The lengthy delays caused many motorists to leave the interstate and take alternate routes, causing further delays on Arkansas 365 and other residential roads.

Three of the accidents occurred on I-40 west at mile markers 134, 136 and 145, and another wreck occurred on I-40 east at mile marker 135, authorities said.

At least one of the accidents had injuries, one dispatcher said, but the severity of those injuries was not immediately clear. The first of the string of accidents happened at about 2 p.m.

Drivers are asked to be cautious Friday evening while traveling along I-40 and Arkansas 365.

What is sad is that AHP either can not or will not redirect traffic. Instead, the park and idle and fume! There has to be a better way to clear roads faster or reroute helpless motorist. Shame on Arkansas!
