ALEXANDRIA — A Sept. 26 sentencing hearing has been scheduled for a woman who pleaded guilty to theft of government money after taking nearly $200,000 in Social Security benefits that went to her deceased mother's account.
Mary Elizabeth Kilpatrick pleaded guilty in June before U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell.
Kilpatrick spent her mother's Social Security payments for more than 22 years after her mother died in 1990.
The SSA deposited $176,714 in widow's benefits into Kilpatrick and her mother's joint account, as well as $15,954 in Medicare premiums and a $250 economic recovery payment. The total loss was $192,918.
Kilpatrick faces up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, restitution, and three years of supervised release.
