MovieStyle: Whoa Canada

The annual roll out of prestige films starts this week with Prisoners, the Hugh Jackman/Jake Gyllenhaal/Terrence Howard abducted-child thriller that marks the Hollywood debut of acclaimed French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (Incendies). Piers Marchant says it's intense, atmospheric and doesn’t resolve itself as cleanly as most movies of its type.

Another French-Canadian, the radiant actress Geneieve Bujold, teams with the venerable James Cromwell in Still Mine, a Canadian drama about an elderly couple’s fight against bureaucrats to build their final home in rural New Brunswick. Our Philip Martin (just back from Montreal, by the way) compares the film to (also Canadian) Sarah Polley’s Away From Her, which he says “covered much of the same ground with a similar lack of sentiment.”

And finally, we have Piers Marchant’s wrap up of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. (Now pass me a serviette; these Timbits are sticky, eh?)
