A Lakeview man has been arrested and charged in careless driving after he drove his 1995 Honda Accord into a home that had six people in it, the Baxter County Sheriff's office said in a statement on Sunday.
No injuries were reported from the incident, Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery said. There were two adults and four children inside the home when the accident occurred.
In addition to the careless driving charge, 35-year-old Brian Merrifield was charged in possession of drug paraphernalia. He is in Baxter County Jail and is being held on $1,310 bond. He is set to appear in Baxter County District Court on Oct. 10.
At about 9:28 a.m., the sheriff's office received a call about a car hitting a house located at 4683 CR 27 near Mountain Home, according to the news release.
Authorities said Merrifield was traveling north in his Honda Accord on CR 27 when he missed a stop sign at the intersection with CR 25. Merrifield drove 209 feet into the yard of 50-year-old Donald Mears's residence and struck a hot tub that was on the back patio.
The car continued traveling 103 feet before finally stopping, the release states.
Two walls in the home were knocked down from the crash and a sofa barreled across the room, striking Mears's 13-year-old son who was watching television. Merrifield's vehicle barely missed another bedroom where two other children were sleeping, the release states.
Damages to Mears's home is estimated at least $75,000, and Merrifield's car was reported at a total loss, officials said.
