LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel is among 40 attorneys general urging the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to meet its own deadline and regulate electronic cigarettes in the same way it regulates tobacco products.
In a letter sent to the FDA on Tuesday, the attorneys general said that e-cigarettes are being marketed to children through cartoonlike advertising characters.
The letter says e-cigarettes are portrayed as safe alternatives to traditional cigarettes, but the attorneys general say they are addictive and capable of delivering high doses of nicotine.
McDaniel says Arkansas legislators enacted a law this year prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes to minors in the state, but he says there's no such federal prohibition.
An industry group says it agrees that e-cigarettes should be regulated as tobacco products.
