Garland County sheriff's office warns citizens of phone scam

A new phone scam is making its way around the state, the Garland County sheriff's office said in a statement Tuesday.

The caller, who uses the phone number (867) 428-5228 and claims to be from Publishers Clearing House, tells people they have won $3.8 million, according to the statement. But in order to receive the prize, the caller says, the person must wire $499.99 and provide banking information to the caller.

"If you should receive a call similar to this tell the caller that you don't give out personal information over the phone and that you will contact the company directly," the sheriff's office said. "Make it a point to never give personal information, such as bank account or social security numbers, unless you have initiated the call and you know that you reached the right agency."
