LITTLE ROCK — True Grit author Charles Portis is being honored at a ceremony at the Arkansas Governor's Mansion.
Portis will receive The Porter Prize lifetime achievement award Thursday night. The Porter Prize is given out annually to an Arkansas writer, while the lifetime achievement award is handed out every five years.
Previous lifetime achievement award winners are novelist Donald Harington and poet Miller Williams.
Born in El Dorado in 1933, Portis worked as a newspaper reporter before turning to novels. He is best known for True Grit, the western that was later adapted into two award-winning films.
Portis lives in Little Rock. His most recent work is Escape Velocity: A Charles Portis Miscellany.
