Broadway star and Arkansas native Lawrence Hamilton has died, Gov. Mike Beebe said Friday. He was 59.

Born Sept. 14, 1954, Hamilton grew up in Foreman and studied music education at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, according to his Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame profile.

Hamilton also served as the director of cultural affairs and an assistant professor of humanities at Philander Smith College in Little Rock.

Hamilton's sister, Evelyn Hall, says Hamilton died Thursday after complications from surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.

"We are all saddened by the loss of Arkansas Broadway star Lawrence Hamilton," Beebe said via Twitter. "He was a good friend to the Beebes for many years."
