Algerian army kills alleged female terrorist

— Algeria's defense ministry said the army has fatally shot an alleged terrorist in northeast Algeria.

The ministry said in a statement Sunday the woman was killed during a sweep by troops in the eastern city of Jijel. Several guns and various munitions were seized, and computer equipment and telephones were destroyed.

Further details weren't provided. It's believed to be the first time that Algerian authorities publicly announced the killing of a female terrorist in a country wracked by a deadly insurgency in the 1990s. Women generally have support roles in the extremist factions that remain.

Terror groups today carry out sporadic attacks in Algeria -- notably in the east. An attack last year at a gas installation near the Libyan border left at least 37 hostages dead.
