Gov. Faubus said he very likely will not announce his sixth-term plans this week because he can’t get ready. There was an indication from his office that he might be coming out with them this week, but he told reporters, “You know I like to do these things in the middle of the week to help out the weekly newspapers and I just can’t get ready in time to do it this week.” He did say that he probably would do it on a Wednesday and looking at the calendar said, “I have four more left.” In answer to a question about possible opponents the governor said, “I do not expect to get away without a contest - if I run.” There was so much hesitation before “if I run” that reporters wondered out loud if he planned to add that. The governor is expected to announce for a sixth term.

Little Rock police took a shortcut Wednesday to relieve their crowded jail. Thirteen prisoners held on felony charges and awaiting space at the equally crowded Pulaski County Jail were taken before Circuit Judge John Langston for a bond hearing. Langston set six prisoners free on their own recognizance. The bonds of two others were reduced enough that they may be fee within a day or two. All are charged with non-violent felonies. The action was one of two drastic steps Police Capt. Horace Walters took Wednesday as the jail population, which normally fluctuates between 80 and 100 prisoners, soared to 127. The other step was for the jail to stop accepting prisoners charged with or convicted of misdemeanor crimes. A sign to that effect was posted at the jail’s rear entrance Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities suspect a used car dealer in Monticello tricked more than 20 customers into purchasing cars they would never actually own, bilking them and others out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. And now, they say, he’s on the run. A judge issued a warrant for the arrest of 39-year-old Ricky E. Funderburg on Monday in Drew County. Funderburg is wanted on five counts of theft by deception and one count of continuing criminal enterprise, Monticello Police Lt. John Dement said.
