•–––––MITTIE MAE WILLIAMS DANGERFIELD of North Little Rock passed away on April 4, at the age of 95. She was born July 21, 1918 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Mittie was a 1964 night school graduate of Scipio A. Jones High School. She traveled many states representing Jones High School as the PTA secretary and later as its president. She retired from the Game and Fish Commission after 20 years. The majority of her time was spent in service to her church. Her servant’s heart led her to serve as a member and leader of numerous church auxiliaries.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Henry and Ophelia Pugh Williams; Husband, Otis Dangerfield; three sisters and one brother, Thelma Gibson, Blanche Williams, Lillian Johnson and Sherman Williams. She leaves behind to cherish her memories two sisters: Ruth Morris of Little Rock, Arkansas and Robbie D. Williams of Seattle, Washington; a son, Charles Earl Williams (Earlean) of North Little Rock, Arkansas; one daughter, Carolyn Jean Lowe of Little Rock, Arkansas. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Phillip Williams, Andra’ Williams Sr., LaSonya Williams-Campbell, Charlotte Williams-Jackson, Nicole Williams, Erin Fleeks, and Donald Fleeks; one sister-in-law, Geneva Williams. Her love and legacy will live on in her 14 great-grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews, friends and acquaintances.

•–––––GENEVA “JEAN” WILKIE DAVIDSON, 86, of North Little Rock, Ark., passed away on Sunday, April 6th, 2014. She was born on November 29, 1927 in Sardis, Miss. to Walter T. and Doris R. Wilkie. The family moved to Caster, La. where she graduated from Caster High School in the 11th grade, which was common in Louisiana during this time. They then moved to Gurdon, Ark., where she also graduated from Gurdon High School after completing the 12th grade. In Gurdon, Jean met and married her husband of 56 years, Roland “Lefty” Davidson. They made their home in Gurdon until moving to North Little Rock in 1964.

Jean was a long time employee of the Fashion Corner in North Little Rock and a member of First Presbyterian Church where she served many years as an elder. She will be remembered as a kind and gentle person.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, W.T. Wilkie, Jr. and sister, Naomi Wilkie. Jean is survived by her daughters, Ellen Culp and husband David and Nelda Strickland. She is also survived by brothers, Darryl and wife Helen, and Billy Wilkie; sisters-in-law, Brooksie Read Duncan and Bobbie Wilkie; grandchildren, Jason Culp and wife, Betsy, Cory Cup and wife Jennifer, Steven Culp, Matthew and Ellen Strickland; great-grandchildren, Walker and Maggie Culp and Tucker and Avery Culp.

•–––––HERB MESSICK, 73, of Sherwood passed away Monday, April 7, 2014. He served in the United States Air Force, was a former police officer with Montgomery County in Maryland and volunteered at Sherwood Police Department. He was a 4th degree knight with the Knights of Columbus. Herb was the greatest daddy that anyone could ask for and he will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his daughter, Ashli Mashburn (Ray) of Texarkana; son, Kevin Messick (Sandy) of Benton; daughter, Mary Shannon Romanko (Paul) of Agawam, Massachusetts; grandson, Jaxon Romanko, of Agawam, Massachusetts; and his former wife, Cathey Carter, of Marion, Indiana. •–––––MICHAEL ODELL NELSON, 67, of Little Rock, Ark., was born on May 17, 1946 and departed this life on April 5, 2014. He was a brick mason and farmer. As a long time member of St. Paul UMC, he served on various committees.

His wife, parents, and one daughter, preceded him in death. •–––––CHRISTOPHER HUNTER ONEAL, 24, of Little Rock, born April 11, 1989, passed away April 6, 2014. He proudly served in the Army National Guard and was a combat medic in Iraq. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Rose and Jack Russ, Chuck and Betty Oneal; great-grandmother, Nelly Oneal; and uncles, Harvey Russ and Ron Oneal.

Chris is survived by the love of his life, Ashley Chance. He is also survived by son, Connor Jackson Oneal; father, Greg (Sandy) Oneal; mother, Lisa Oneal; siblings, Shynia Oneal, Shaun (Shae) Oneal, and Nick (Veronica) McClane; nephew, Mac McClane; as well as a host of special friends and family.

•–––––FRANK THOMAS PADBERG SR,. MD, age 96, passed away peacefully surrounded by his immediate family on April 5, 2014. He was born on March 9, 1918 in Canton, Oklahoma to Albert F Padberg, the town’s general medical practitioner and Mayme Thomas Padberg who taught school. Graduating Canton High School he attended Wentworth Military Academy. As a professionally trained baritone, he served as Soloist during these years and considered a vocal “career.” As the 1937 Honor Graduate from Wentworth he was eligible for appointment to West Point, but elected to pursue a medical career at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois. He also excelled at this institution, was elected to AOA, the academic medical Honor Society, and graduated in 1943. He was selected for internship at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Helen Louise Swan, of Konawa, Oklahoma, and Frank were married on Feb 6, 1943 and celebrated their 71st anniversary in 2014. As a Captain in the US Army Medical Corps he deployed to Bristol UK, Cherbourg France, and Liege Belgium, from June 1942 to April 1946 with the 298th General Hospital. Returning to Northwestern, he completed a residency in surgery and neurosurgery training with Loyal Davis, author of surgical and neurosurgical textbooks and father of Nancy Reagan.

The family moved to Little Rock bringing the newly formulated specialty of Neurosurgery to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and Little Rock Veterans Affairs Hospitals in 1952. A practice in Neurosurgery was based at St Vincent’s Hospital from 1952-1973. During this time he became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as President of the Arkansas Chapter. The Arkansas State Nurses Association awarded him Honorary Recognition in 1969. He was an active member of Rotary International and The Little Rock Club.

Frank and Helen maintained dual residency in Chicago and Little Rock after he accepted a position as Director of Fellowship and Graduate Medical Education with the American College of Surgeons in 1973. He received the College’s Distinguished Service Award in 1988 and retired from the College in 1999. The Surgical Section of the National Medical Association honored him with their Distinguished Service Award that same year. In addition to the ACS, he was a member of other distinguished surgical organizations including the American Surgical Association, the Southern Surgical Association, the Southern Neurosurgical Society and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

As an active member of the Second Presbyterian Church, Little Rock, Frank served as an Elder and was an active participant in the Men’s Bible class; in Chicago he served as a Deacon in 4th Presbyterian Church, Chicago, Illinois. During church services his projected baritone supplemented the inspiration inherent in the hymns. International travel was a frequent diversion and he managed to visit every continent but Antarctica. He and Frank Jr. went behind the iron curtain to visit eastern Europe and Russia during the era of the cold war. The entire family participated in several reunions with the Familienverband Padberg (the international Padberg family) attending several reunions in St Louis, USA as well as Berlin, Cologne, & Padberg, Germany. Frank maintained a relationship with the families in Canton, Oklahoma and was a contributor to the church. Frank had a distinguished and honest character coupled with a heart for gracious generosity to less fortunate associates and charitable giving.

Frank was predeceased by his older sister, Louise Aline Padberg Souders, MD of Rock Island, Ill., and both parents. He is survived by his wife, Helen, his daughter, Kristen (Denver, Colo.), his son, Frank Jr, his daughter-in-law, Sharon, and his grandson, Frank III (Berkeley Heights, N.J.). A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, April 11, 2014 at the Second Presbyterian Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock. •–––––BILLYE “DENA” VALESE WASHINGTON, 52, of Little Rock, departed this life and went home to glory on her birthday, April 6, 2014, surrounded by many family and friends.

She is survived by her mother, Judy Green; brother, Richardo Washington; sister, Tanya Washington; nephew, Ahran Washington; niece, Paige Watkins; three aunts: Karen “Sue” Reese; Rose Tucker; Dr. Patricia McGraw; three uncles: Donald Washington; Phillip Williams; Donald Jefferson; and a host of cousins and special friends. Dena was preceded in life by her father, Willie “Billy” Albert Washington Jr. and four grandparents: Thurman Lee Freeman, Ann Lee Freeman Williams, Willie Albert Washington Sr. and Ruth Ellen Washington.

Known to all that knew her, as “Dena,” she was a very special daughter, sister, aunt and special friend who lived her life her way. She was beautiful, feisty, smart, and loved by all that new her. She excelled educationally, professionally and spiritually, and helped many during her fight for good causes. Dena graduated from Hall High School in 1981, received a B.A. in Advertising & Marketing from UALR, received an MBA from Webster University, and was one year away from receiving her Doctorate degree in Business Administration (DBA). She also obtained a license in interior decorating from Chandler School of Decorating. Dena was employed with Entergy Arkansas for 20 years; her various duties and responsibilities included working in the call-center as a customer service representative, coordinator for customer support, training coordinator and supervisor, supervisor over quality assurance/ monitoring, and her most recent assignment was in compliance and systems support as an analyst and auditor over the calibration process. Dena was an active and dedicated member of Saint Andrew AME Church where she served as a steward; strategic planner; chaired various church programs; and served as secretary, vice-president, and president of the mass choir. She was also a member of the Cultural Enrichment Club. She was truly a shepherd for GOD and this angel’s spirit will live on forever. Dena was also a member of the Pulaski County Democratic Party, Democratic Black Caucus, and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).

BEEBE — Norman Harden, 82, of Beebe, Ark., was born February 6, 1932, at Haywood, Okla., to Abe and Floy Harden. He died Tuesday, April 8, 2014. He was employed at CE Natco for 31 years and Omega Marine for 10 years. He retired in 1995.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Lou Breshears; and granddaughter Amanda Harden.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Corpier of 60 years; son, Don and his wife Susan; daughter, Beverly and her husband Troy Meacham; grandsons Charles White and Oliver Meacham; two great-granddaughters; special niece Billy Gleason; sisters-in-law, Ollie Mae Simmons, Billy Jo Gentry, Omagene and husband Floyd Ingram; brother-in-law, Charles Breshears; and a large family of loving nieces, nephews and friends.

•–––––BRINKLEY — Ella Mae Harrison Carroll, 83, died Sunday, April 6. She was the widow of James H. “Jimmy” Carroll Jr. and a faithful member of the Brinkley First United Methodist Church.

Nancy was born in New Orleans, La., to William and Emelda Nugent on January 29, 1964. She went to school at Grace King High School. She married Jeffrey Franchek on March 3, 1990.

Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, William and Emelda (Nugent), her son, Matthew, and her brother-in-law, Rick Cooley. •–––––CABOT — Dana Jo Smith, age 60, of Cabot was called home by our Lord and Savior, Monday, April 7, 2014. She was born June 25, 1953 in Little Rock to John Daniel and JoAnn Holman. Dana was very devoted to her family and to her faith. She attended Lonoke Baptist Church and was employed with the Lonoke County Sheriff’s Department. Dana devoted her life to her husband, children, grandchildren and that devotion to her family was never more evident than in her five-year battle with cancer. Her determination to overcome the disease was a testament to her overwhelming spirit to live another day and touched so many lives. Her fight continued until the angels escorted her home.

Cherishing her memory are her husband of 40 years, Ronald “Ronnie” Smith; son, Jacob Smith (Tina); daughter, Rachel Fryar (Chad); mother, JoAnn Holman; sister Sherry Fitzhugh (Carl); Kim Price (Richard); Jessica Hughes (Michael); four grandchildren, Jayla Luxton, Kelby Smith, Channer Smith and Marlee Jo Fryar and a host of other loved ones which includes nieces, nephews, extended family and friends who will miss her dearly. He was a Rotarian for many years and proud of his Paul Harris Fellowship. Jack cared deeply for and loved his family and friends with all his heart. He was a generous, loving and caring husband, son, father and grandfather. He loved family time on Lake Ouachita, golfing, horse racing, Razorback football and basketball and traveling the USA.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Carl F. Johnson, her father, Lewis Crow and mother, Villa (Boone) Crow. She is survived by her husband of 35 plus years, Lester Brown; her brother, James Crow (Linda) of Vilonia; her sisters, Sue Nelson of Quitman and Rachel Wright (David) from DeQueen, her children Dwayne Franklin Johnson (Linda), Gary Douglas Johnson (Margaret) and Michael Linn Johnson all of Quitman. ATHENS, Ala. — Basil Wayne Wheeler, 75, of Athens passed away at his home accompanied by his family on the morning of April 5, 2014. On Tuesday, April 8, his extended family and friends were invited to Visitation between 1-3:45 p.m., followed by funeral services at 4 p.m. with Pastor Edwin Jenkins officiating. The First Baptist Church of Athens hosted both celebrations of his life.

Basil was raised in Monticello, Arkansas, by his loving parents, Edison and Rita Wheeler. He served our Country in the U.S. Army as an instructor for HAWK air defense system at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He met his soulmate, Gloria Andrews Wheeler, during his service and remained happily married to her for almost 53 years.

After service, Basil finished his education at Athens State University. He became a highly successful engineer and entrepreneur, and was the sole founder of Cast Products Incorporated (CPI). CPI has been located in Athens since its origin in 1979, and now employs approximately 150 workers in the Athens Community. Basil successfully patented several inventions which revolutionized the emergency vehicle industry. Several of his inventions and CPI products, including emergency vehicle lights, sirens, and ambulance IV hangers, are recognized as nationwide industry standards to this day.

In his later years, Basil enjoyed travel, antique and collectible automobiles, golf, fishing, and vacationing in the Smokies and the Alabama coast. His favorite and most cherished pastime was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, whom he loved with all his heart and soul.

Basil was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Bruce Wheeler, and a sister, Teddy Wheeler Morrill. His is survived by a sister, Jean Wheeler Boothe, of Dallas, Texas; his wife Gloria; two daughters, Ginger Medlen and Lisa McMurry of Athens, their husbands, Mike Medlen and Russ McMurry; and four grandchildren: Colby Wayne Medlen, a University of Alabama alumni currently employed as the Chief Operating Officer of CPI and recently married to Caroline Scherff Medlen; Courtney Lynn Medlen, University of Alabama alumni and current doctoral candidate in physical therapy at the University of Southern California; Colin Wheeler McMurry, University of Alabama alumni and Masters of Business Administration candidate who will begin employment with Wells Fargo in Charlotte, N.C., in June; and Caroline Elizabeth Medlen, a cheerleader and junior at Athens High School.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, nephews, Brian McDonald, Jeff McDonald, Shalon Kindred, Steven Andrews, and Bruce Graf, and dear friends Boyd Jackson, Richard (Dick) DiLullo, Gary Poole, Jim Flynt, Tom Stevenson, and Ray Wolfe.

In honor of the dignity in which Basil lived his life, memorials may be made to Hospice of Limestone County, St. Jude’s Children’s hospital, or any other organization dedicated to service of persons in need.
