DETROIT — A 16-year-old Detroit boy charged with assault and ethnic intimidation in the mob beating of a suburban motorist has been ordered held on a $400,000 cash bond.
Referee Raeigen Woods told the teen at a juvenile court hearing Saturday that the seriousness of the charges and severity of the victim's injuries necessitated a high bond. Defense attorney Sterling Coleman asked for a lower bond.
The teen is accused of being part of a mob that beat Steve Utash, who stopped April 2 to help a boy he struck with his pickup truck.
Utash is in critical condition. The 10-year-old boy was treated for leg and other injuries.
Four men also are charged in the attack, which police investigated whether it was racially motivated. Utash is white, those charged are black.
