Will Take Charge withstands inquiry, wins Oaklawn Handicap

Trainer D.Wayne Lukas and jockey Luis Saez (at right) wait to find out if Will Take Charge’s first-place finish in Saturday’s $600,000 Oaklawn Handicap would become official. It finally did, but it took more than 10 minutes for the track stewards to make their ruling after posting the inquiry sign and considering claims of foul from rival jockeys Mike Smith and Gary Stevens. Will Take Charge, owned by Marshall’s Willis Horton, finished three-quarters of a length ahead of Revolutionary in the 1 1/8-mile race. Will Take Charge, the country’s champion 3-year-old male of 2013, took a narrow lead on the outside in midstretch, but drifted in under right-handed urging to brush a tiring Golden Lad.
