Lynn, Cardinals stop Brewers’ nine-game winning streak

MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Brewers’ nine-game winning streak was snapped Monday night when Lance Lynn struck out 11 in seven innings and Jon Jay hit a three-run home run for the St. Louis Cardinals in a 4-0 victory.

Lynn allowed three hits over seven innings before Carlos Martinez finished off the surprising Brewers, who still have the majors’ best record at 10-3.

Lynn (3-0) frustrated hitters by mixing a fastball that topped 95 mph with a slider.

Jhonny Peralta homered in the second off Brewers starter Matt Garza (0-2) before Jay sent a ball over the wall near the right field corner in the sixth.

Garza dueled Lynn until running into trouble in the sixth after Craig reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs and Peralta singled to set up Jay’s home run.

Lynn cooled off a Brewers team that was off to its best start since opening the 1987 season with 13 consecutive victories.

Garza allowed 9 hits and 4 runs, and struck out 6 in seven innings for Milwaukee. Rookie reliever Wei-Chung Wang, a Rule 5 pick, pitched a scoreless ninth in making his big league debut.

BRAVES 9, PHILLIES 6 Dan Uggla hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the ninth inning that lifted visiting Atlanta to a wild victory over Philadelphia. Evan Gattis also homered twice and Uggla drove in five runs as the Braves won their fourth consecutive. The teams combined for five home runs and 12 runs in the final two innings. Gattis, Uggla and Andrelton Simmons hit consecutive home runs in the eighth that put Atlanta ahead 5-1. Domonic Brown’s three-run home run capped a five-run bottom of the eighth that gave the Phillies a 6-5 lead. But the Braves rallied against Jake Diekman (1-1). B.J. Upton walked, Freddie Freeman reached on a grounder when second baseman Chase Utley made a questionable decision to try for a forceout and Justin Upton walked to load the bases with no outs. After Gattis struck out swinging at a 98 mph fastball, Uggla drove an 0-2 pitch from Diekman deep into the seats in left.

NATIONALS 9, MARLINS 2 Jordan Zimmermann became the first starter to pitch seven innings this season for visiting Washington, and the Nationals totaled 11 extra-base hits to beat slumping Miami. The rout came after the Nationals were swept in a three-game series at Atlanta. The Marlins lost their eighth consecutive game. Bryce Harper had two doubles and an RBI triple for Washington. He has batted .520 over his past seven games to boost his average to .348. Harper came out of the game as a precaution in seventh inning after he slipped running the bases. He said he has been nursing a sore thigh muscle.

AMERICAN LEAGUE MARINERS 7, RANGERS 1 Mike Zunino homered an inning before adding an RBI single in Seattle’s strange six-run outburst that included three Texas errors and a replay reversal that gave the Mariners a run in their victory over the host Rangers. Roenis Elias (1-1) worked into the seventh inning with five strikeouts for his first major league victory in the left-hander’s third career start. The Mariners went ahead to stay in the fifth on Zunino’s home run off Colby Lewis (0-1), who made his first big league start in 21 months after elbow and hip operations. Seattle’s six-run sixth got started when Robinson Cano hit a leadoff single and scored on Michael Saunders’ triple to left-center - a ball that center fielder Leonys Martin bobbled without getting charged with an error. Kyle Seager followed with an RBI single that chased Lewis, and then things got interesting. Dustin Ackley and Zunino had consecutive RBI singles after catcher J.P. Arencibia couldn’t pull in a foul ball before reaching out and teetering over a camera well railing. Mix in two fielding errors, and the bases were loaded when Brad Miller hit a comebacker. Relief pitcher Pedro Figueroa threw home, and umpire Paul Schrieber initially ruled a forceout even though Arencibia bobbled the ball on a transfer without dropping it or making a throw. Seattle Manager Lloyd McClendon challenged the call. After a review that took 3 minutes, 31 seconds, the umpires reversed their ruling, erasing the out and giving Seattle a run on the error by Arencibia. Rangers Manager Ron Washington immediately came out to argue and was ejected by crew chief Ted Barrett because managers aren’t allowed to argue replay rulings.

ORIOLES 7, RAYS 1 Wei-Yin Chen (2-1) retired his first 10 batters and didn’t allow a hit until James Loney doubled with one out in the fifth and host Baltimore beat Tampa Bay. The left-hander gave up 1 run, 5 hits and 2 walks in 6 1/3 innings. In his previous two starts, Chen yielded eight runs and 21 hits in 10 2/3 innings. Matt Wieters and J.J. Hardy each had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run for the Orioles, who were coming off a three-game series against Toronto in which they scored only five runs in 30 innings.
