Cherokee Nation to build new casino in east Oklahoma

ROLAND, Okla. — Cherokee Nation Businesses plans a groundbreaking next month on a hotel and casino to replace its current complex in Roland, near the Arkansas border.

The Journal Record reported that the new facility will include a six-story, 125-room hotel and an 87,000-square-foot casino accommodating 850 games with a bar, stage and other entertainment options. The existing casino in Roland now has 600 electronic games and six table games.

Officials say the new complex will also include convention space, a swimming pool and a smoke shop.

Cherokee Nation Businesses Chief Executive Shawn Slaton said the existing facility at Interstate 40 and U.S. 64 will be demolished once the new complex is built.

Slaton said he hopes the new casino will become a "destination stop" for travelers on Interstate 40.

Roland is about 8 miles from Fort Smith.
