A University of Arkansas at Fayetteville chemical engineering student interested in alternative-energy research has been named a Goldwater scholar.

Hailey Dunsworth of Farmington was the only Arkansas recipient of the selective honor for mathematics, science and engineering students. This year, 283 students nationally were named scholars by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.

Dunsworth, a junior, will receive up to $7,500 for her senior year. Her goal is to earn a doctorate and continue research either with a national laboratory or a renewable-energy company, according to a statement from UA announcing the award.

“Research can be frustrating at times, but when results finally come together it is more rewarding than I ever expected, and I look forward to making research my career,” Dunsworth said in a statement.

The award marked the 19th consecutive year that at least one UA student has been named a Goldwater scholar.
