SUV overturns on I-40; one killed, two hurt

A driver was killed and two passengers hurt early Friday when a sport utility vehicle overturned on Interstate 40 in Crittenden County.

The single-vehicle accident happened about 2:50 a.m. near the 270 mile marker west of West Memphis.

According to an Arkansas State Police report, 57-year-old Jerry L. White of Memphis was driving a 2001 Nissan Xterra east on the highway when the vehicle went out of control and crossed the median.

Police say the SUV then overturned, ejecting White and passenger Carlos Carter, 51, of Memphis.

White died at the scene. Carter and a second passenger, 53-year-old Opal D. Carter, were taken to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis with unspecified injuries.

The report didn't indicate what may have caused the Xterra to lose control. Conditions at the time were said to be clear and dry.

The death marked the 99th fatality in a traffic crash in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
