100 YEARS AGO April 20, 1914

“Someone started a rumor on the streets that I had dropped dead, and we have done nothing this evening but receive telephone messages of condolence,” said P.A. Byrd, 1514 Booker St., last night. “I have been ill for several days, but I want my friends to save their sympathies until I am dead, although I appreciate their interest in my welfare.”

50 YEARS AGO April 20, 1964

Gov. Faubus revealed today why he has been in the statehouse so long. After he was entertained in his reception room by a group of high school singers from Mineral Springs, Faubus showed the youngsters the pictures of former governors on the reception room wall. “Those are the pictures of all the former governors,” he said. “I noticed that there wasn’t room for me so I just decided to stick around.” The governor is expected to announce for a sixth term this week.

25 YEARS AGO April 20, 1989

The Dermott Chamber of Commerce is in hot water over its May crawfish festival. Six thousand pounds of Louisiana crawfish will be served at the May 19-20 Dermott 6thannual Crawfish Festival, an extravaganza designed in part to promote Arkansas-grown crawfish. The state crawfish industry, based primarily in the Delta region, is boiling mad. “There’s a lot of people who are upset about it. Dermott is suppose to be the crawfish capital of Arkansas, yet they’re going to be using Louisiana crawfish,” said Vickie Duncan, co-owner of Crawdad Hole, a Dermott crawfish-growing company. She is also a member of the Arkansas Crawfish Association. Ben Bynum, co-chairman of the chamber-sponsored festival, admitted using out-of state crawfish at the event is counterproductive.

10 YEARS AGO April 20, 2004

FAYETTEVILLE - University of Arkansas trustees voted unanimously Monday night to transfer power over the student government at the Fayetteville campus to UA Chancellor John A. White. In the same vote, the board approved a new student constitution for the Associated Student Government at the state’s flagship campus. The 10-0 vote concluded a process that began when White appointed a task force in late January to study the structure of Associated Student Government and suggest changes.
