Beebe helps mark 40 years of block grants

Gov. Mike Beebe joined Arkansas Economic Development Commission officials and local leaders to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Community Development Block Grant program.

Beebe joined commission officials and local leaders from across the state Monday at the state Capitol to mark the anniversary of the program created by Congress in 1974. The program has provided more than $700 million to Arkansas communities for projects such as community centers, street repair, wastewater systems, local museums, homeless shelters, childcare facilities and libraries.

Projects that were highlighted during the ceremony include the McGehee Japanese American Internment Museum, the Mulberry AVS edamame facility and the Mississippi County Union Rescue Mission.
