Angels turn one easy play into a laugher

The Los Angeles Angels’ game on Sunday against the Detroit Tigers turned on a wacky play that involved three former Arkansas Travelers.

With the Angels leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning Sunday, Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler was on first and Miguel Cabrera was at the plate with a full count. Kinsler broke for second before the pitch, which ended up being a ball, thus a walk to Cabrera.

Angels’ catcher Hank Conger, a former Traveler, popped up and threw to second anyway, but his throw was wide of ex-Traveler Howie Kendrick at second base and went into center field. Kinsler advanced to third on the throwing error. Center fielder Mike Trout, who starred for the Travs in 2011, then casually tossed the ball back into the infield, missing the cut-off man and allowed Kinsler to score with the second error.

Pitcher Hector Santiago, still thinking he had time to get Kinsler, threw wide of Conger for the third error as Cabrera advanced to second.

To sum up: one play, three throwing errors, one Tigers run without the bat touching the ball.

The Tigers, without the help of an error, scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning to win 2-1.

“I’ve actually seen that play happen a lot,” the Orange County Register’s Jeff Fletcher tweeted, “but it usually involves 9-year-olds.”

And from the Los Angeles Times’ Mike DiGiovanna: “Won’t even try to recap [three error] play in one tweet. Watch bottom 10 on ESPN. I’m sure they’ll have it.”Off color

The city of San Francisco’s public transportation system is getting an upgrade, complete with brand new train cars that come with more room, taller ceilings and bike racks.

Seems like a very logical undertaking that would please most citizens. Then sports fans got involved.

It seems one San Francisco49ers fan was upset with the interior of the cars, which includes neon green and blue seats. Or to put it another way: the team colors of the rival Seattle Seahawks.

One fan went as far to create an online petition on Change.org, saying that putting the interior in green and blue “is an outrage and a slap in the face of every San Francisco 49ers fan.”

As of Sunday afternoon, 750 of have signed the online petition.

No more football

How tough can it be watching Big Ten football at times? One coach would rather watch people chow down on cheeseburgers and sip milkshakes.

Iowa’s Eric Johnson announced Saturday that he was resigning as the Hawkeyes’ recruiting coordinator and moving to Tennessee. No, not for another coaching job, but to open Culver’s restaurant in Hendersonville, Tenn.”

“Restaurant opens Nov 1st,” Johnson posted on Twitter.

“#Hawkeyes games will [be] on TVs!”

Johnson was hired to Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz’ original staff in 1999, and had been the Hawkeyes’ recruiting coordinator for the last 10 seasons.
