U.S. Sen. John Boozman is undergoing unscheduled surgery Tuesday morning at an Arkansas hospital, his office said.

Boozman, 63, "is receiving excellent care," a statement on his website says, without specifying his ailment.

Patrick Creamer, a spokesman for Boozman, said he did not have information on what prompted the surgery or specifics about the procedure. He said information was coming in from Boozman's family and would be released as soon as possible.

"He's doing well," Creamer said.

The Northwest Arkansas Business Journal reported that Boozman was taken to the Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas emergency room for emergency heart surgery, but that couldn't be immediately confirmed.

Creamer said he could not divulge the hospital. When asked whether it was an emergency procedure, he said only that it was "unscheduled."

The senator had been scheduled to speak this morning at the opening of the first stretch of the Bella Vista Bypass.

Calls to two Boozman spokesmen weren't immediately answered.
