This Oct. 13, 2013, file photo shows Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy speaking at the University of Pennsylvania law school in Philadelphia. The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on using race as a factor in college admissions.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan’s ban on using race as a factor in college admissions.

The justices said in a 6-2 ruling that Michigan voters had the right to change their state constitution in 2006 to prohibit public colleges and universities from taking account of race in admissions decisions. The justices said that a lower federal court was wrong to set aside the change as discriminatory.

The decision bolstered similar voter-approved initiatives banning affirmative action in education in California and Washington state. A few other states have adopted laws or issued executive orders to bar race-conscious admissions policies.

Wow, even a couple of the liberal judges voted in favor. Now that's bipartisanship!

There were way too many highly qualified candidates denied a chance to go to UM law school because they were white; they had much higher grades and LSAT scores but were told "sorry, you are not a minority". The fact Sonia Sotomayor (sp?) is so vehemently for quotas like this is scary.

Who were the two racists that voted against this?

Right, Po. And they intend for themselves to be the more equal. Orwell nailed them precisely.

I don't that affirmative action should be based on race or gender for that matter. (Surprise, guys!) But I do think we should have extra help for kids from economically disadvantaged families - I don't care what color they are. No quotas. They don't help, they hurt.

@nwr - What you say is already happening. Kids from poor families qualify for various aid programs that kids from middle class families do not. Have you noticed the lack of affirmative action on the US Supreme Court? How many of its members graduated college from anything other than an Ivy League school? That's the lack of diversity that America needs to address.

This Country does not need diversity, it needs to stand as one, as in people.
