Dad accused of punching son over beans, police say

A North Little Rock man is accused of punching his teenage son in a disturbance that started over some beans, authorities said.

Maurice D. Givens, 44, was arrested about 10:15 p.m. Monday on a charge of third-degree domestic battery.

According to a North Little Rock police report, officers went to the family's apartment in the 900 block of West Scenic Drive to investigate a possible domestic situation.

The 16-year-old victim told investigators "he and his father were in a disturbance over beans that were for dinner," the report said.

It added the son went to his room to go to bed when an irate Givens followed him, "striking him with a closed fist causing injury to his right eye and left jaw."

The report did not indicate what about the beans may have sparked the altercation.

Givens remained in the Pulaski County jail Tuesday morning with bail not yet set pending an initial court appearance.
