RAYS Moore has elbow surgery

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Matt Moore has undergone elbow ligament replacement surgery and could be sidelined 12 to 15 months.

The Rays announced Tuesday that the surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews.

Moore, 24, left his start April 7 in Kansas City because of elbow soreness and was placed on the 15-day disabled list the following day. He was an All-Star last season.

Tampa Bay activated reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo from the 15-day disabled list. Oviedo had right elbow ligament replacement surgery in September 2012.

Oviedo last pitched in the majors Sept. 21, 2011, for Miami, when he was known as Leo Nunez.

WHITE SOX Sale placed on 15-day DL

DETROIT - Chris Sale figures his arm injury could have been a lot worse.

The Chicago White Sox believe Sale has a strained muscle in his throwing arm, and the ace left-hander was officially put on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. There does not appear to be any ligament damage.

Sale said it is similar to an issue he dealt with in 2012 and that he expects to be back once he is eligible to come off the disabled list. The move is retroactive to last Friday. The White Sox recalled left-hander Charlie Leesman from Class AAA Charlotte to start in Sale’s place Tuesday night against Detroit.

Chicago also assigned right hander Frank Francisco to Charlotte after a stint at extended spring training.
