Ex-Hog Bolsinger wins first in majors at Wrigley

CHICAGO - Former Arkansas Razorback Mike Bolsinger earned his first major league victory, pitching into the seventh inning and hitting an RBI single as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 on Thursday.

Bolsinger (1-1) allowed one unearned run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Miguel Montero drove in two runs, and the Diamondbacks won consecutive games for only the second time this season. Addison Reed got his fifth save in six chances with a perfect ninth.

Edwin Jackson (1-2) pitched seven innings. He retired 17 of 18 batters after Bolsinger’s run-scoring single in the second.

Montero hit a two-out double in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.

The Cubs got that run back right away in the bottom half. Leadoff man Emilio Bonifacio stretched a hit up the middle into a hustle double, which was reviewed when it appeared he was tagged out when he overslid the base. After a lengthy replay review, the call stood.

Following a walk, Bonifacio scored on Arizona left fielder Roger Kieschnick’s error on a line drive by Anthony Rizzo.

The Cubs went on to load the bases with one out on a walk, but Bolsinger struck out Mike Olt looking and got Welington Castillo to fly out.

Cliff Pennington walked in the Arizona second and scored on Tony Campana’s double. Bolsinger singled for a 3-1 lead.

Despite throwing 40 pitches through two innings, Jackson posted his longest outing since Sept. 10. He allowed 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4.

Rizzo hit a solo home run in the eighth, his third of the season.

REDS 2, PIRATES 1 Ryan Ludwick lined a two-run double after two Cincinnati batters werehit by pitches, lifting Tony Cingrani and the visiting Reds over Pittsburgh. Cingrani (2-2) allowed 1 run and 6 hits in 6 innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

METS 4, CARDINALS 1 Chris Young hit a home run to start New York’s comeback and slumping Curtis Granderson singled in a run as a pinch-hitter as the host Mets beat St. Louis.

PADRES 4, NATIONALS 3 (12) Former Nationals outfielder Xavier Nady’s tiebreaking RBI single off Craig Stammen in the top of the 12th inning gave visiting San Diego a victory over Washington.

AMERICAN LEAGUE TIGERS 7, WHITE SOX 4 Miguel Cabrera drove in three runs, Max Scherzer struck out 10 and host Detroit beat the Chicago White Sox. Cabrera hit 2 two-out singles for his RBI. Rajai Davis hit a home run, doubled, singled and drove in two runs. Scherzer (2-1) allowed two runs in six innings.

TWINS 9, RAYS 7 Aaron Hicks hit a three-run home run, Kurt Suzuki drove in three runs and visiting Minnesota beat Tampa Bay. Former Rays outfielder Sam Fuld hit two RBI doubles for the Twins, who won two of three for their first road series victory against the Rays since Sept. 4-6, 2006.

INDIANS 5, ROYALS 1 Corey Kluber struck out a career-high 11 and pitched a four-hitter for his first complete game, and David Murphy and Asdrubal Cabrera drove in two runs each, leading host Cleveland over Kansas City.

ORIOLES 11, BLUE JAYS 4 Chris Davis had two hits and three RBI, Jonathan Schoop hit a home run and visiting Baltimore beat Toronto. Nelson Cruz had two hits and drove in two runs for the Orioles, extending his streak of games with at least one RBI to seven.

YANKEES 14, RED SOX 5 Yangervis Solarte drove in four runs, Mark Teixeira hit his first home run of the season and visiting New York capitalized on five Boston errors to beat the Red Sox. CC Sabathia (3-2) struck out 8 while allowing 2 runs on 3 hits in 6 innings.

ASTROS 10, ATHLETICS 1 Josh Donaldson hit 2 two-run home runs to help the Oakland Athletics cruise to a victory over Houston. It was the first two-home run game for Donaldson, who connected in the first inning and pushed the lead to 10-1 with a second shot in the seventh. Alberto Callaspo added a two-run home run in the third and Jed Lowrie had three hits for the A’s.
