BASKETBALL UCA men add 11th signee

Central Arkansas men’s Coach Russ Pennell has signed former Grand Canyon University center Jake Zuilhof to this year’s signing class.

The Bears have signed 11 players since the national signing period began April 16.

Zuilhof, 6-9, 230 pounds, played for Pennell at Grand Canyon as a freshman in 2011-2012 before redshirting in 2012-2013. He averaged 1.6 points and 1.6 rebounds per game in 20 games last season for Grand Canyon. Since he’s used his redshirt season, Zuilhof will be eligible to play immediately at UCA.

  • Jeremy Muck Sugar Bears pick up transfer

Austin Peay forward Alexis Hardaway is transferring to Central Arkansas, UCA announced in a release Thursday.

Hardaway, 5-10, is the fifth player the Sugar Bears have added this spring. She averaged 4.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game over two seasons at Austin Peay.

Hardaway will have two years of eligibility remaining after she sits out the 2014-2015 season because of NCAA transfer rules.

GOLF UCA’s Brown named golfer of the year

Central Arkansas sophomore Sarah Brown was named the 2013-2014 Southland Conference Women’s Golfer of the Year after a vote of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors, the league office announced Thursday.

Brown was medalist at last week’s 2014 Southland Championship at High Meadow Ranch Golf Club in Magnolia, Texas. The sophomore from Mount Pleasant, who trailed by five shots entering the final round, fired the lowest round of the tournament with a 3-under par 69 to claim medalist honors. For the tournament, Brown shot a 3-over 219 to win by a stroke.

Brown averaged 75.03 in 27 rounds this season with a low score of 68 and a low tournament of 216. In 10 tournaments, Brown finished in the top five six times, including two runner-up finishes and the victory at the SLC Championship.

Golden Suns ranked 20th in Division II poll

Arkansas Tech’s women are ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division II Central poll and 20th in the GolfStat Division II national poll.

The top nine teams in the Central Region and top four individual from non-ranked teams will compete in the Central Super Regional at the Tartan Park Golf Course in Lake Elmo, Minn.

Arkansas Tech was joined by Southwestern Oklahoma (No. 5) and Henderson State (No. 6) in the team poll. Harding’s Brittany Marquez is ranked No. 1 in the region while East Central’s Molli Taylor is ranked No. 6.

GolfStat ranks Arkansas Tech 20th

Arkansas Tech’s men are ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division II Central region poll and No. 20 in this week’s GolfStat poll.

The top eight teams from the Central and top eight in the Midwest regions will advance to the regional tournament May 4-7 at Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Mo.

TENNIS Golden Suns fifth in NCAA regional poll

Arkansas State’s women are ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II Central rankings.

The Golden Suns finished as runner-up in the Great American Conference tournament. The top seven teams from the Central regional will qualify for championship play, including the three conference’s automatic bids.

SOCCER Arkansas State releases schedule

Arkansas State announced its 2014 women’s schedule. The Red Wolves will play 18 regular-season matches, including 10 at home along with a nine-game Sun Belt Conference schedule.

The Red Wolves will open the season Aug. 22 at Murray State before playing home games against Tulsa on Aug. 24; Central Arkansas on Aug. 31; and Mississippi State on Sept. 5.

They will open Sun Belt play at home against Texas State on Sept. 26. The regular season concludes with home games against South Alabama on Oct. 24 and Troy on Oct. 26.

The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will be played Nov. 5-9 in Mobile, Ala.
