The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will host a free neck, head and oral cancer-screening event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 2.
The screenings will be performed by the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery in the UAMS College of Medicine and will take place on the sixth floor of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, located at 4301 W. Markham St. No. 623, according to a UAMS statement.
Parking will be available in the UAMS Lot 3, at Cedar Street and Capitol Avenue, and parking tickets will be validated.
"Oral, head and neck cancer is a form of cancer affecting any part of the oral cavity, pharynx, throat, thyroid and larynx (voice box)," the news release states. "Those at risk include people who smoke, chew tobacco or consume excessive alcohol, as well as those who have previously had cancer in the area.
"Signs and symptoms of oral, head and neck cancer include sores in the mouth that do not go away, a growth or swelling in the neck, persistent sore throat, trouble swallowing or voice changes."
