Weather: Storms, flooding seen in state's east

Severe thunderstorms are possible Monday morning in southeast Arkansas, forecasters said.

As a cold front moves through the state, damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes are still possible in east and southeast Arkansas during the morning, the National Weather Service reported. Ashley, Chicot and Union counties remain under a tornado watch until noon Monday.

The best chances for severe weather will be close to the Mississippi River, weather service meteorologist John Robinson said in an email, but the bulk will affect Tennessee and other points east of Arkansas, he added.

A flash-flood watch remains in effect for large swaths of northeast, east-central and extreme southeast Arkansas, Robinson added.

Meanwhile, a flood warning was elevated to "moderate severity" for the White River at Batesville.

Because of high water already accumulated, parts of U.S. 49 in Clay County, including patches in Rector, Piggott and Greenway, were closed, state highway officials said. The highway was closed in Greene County between Marmaduke and Rector, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said via Twitter.

Also in Clay County, Arkansas 90 west of Boydsville; U.S. 62 west of Pollard; and Arkansas 139 from Pollard to the state line were closed because of high water, the department said.

The Highway Department is maintaining a full list of road closings here.
