A big, fancy pedestrian/bicycle bridge spanning the Arkansas River with only portable toilets for pedestrian/cyclist use? That's a Big Dam shame.
That's why the foundation responsible for the Big Dam Bridge, the river-spanning connector for the Arkansas River Trail, hosted Party for the Pavilion on July 24 at the home of Dustin and Hunter East: to raise money for real restroom accommodations.
The invitation-only event was presented by Heels on Wheels cycling club and featured heavy hors d'oeuvres by Trio's, beer from Vino's, flowers from Tipton & Hurst, piano music and vocals by Steve Guilmet, and a small silent auction with items from local bike and running shops. Personalized pavers, to be incorporated into the project, were also sold. "We raised a little over $3,600 at the get-together," says Mark Rogers, foundation chairman.
Rogers made a short presentation that evening, explaining the project. The quest to replace the port-a-potties with permanent restrooms is Phase 1 of a multi-phase project at the bridge. The second phase, a pavilion with an elevated walkway. The third, a concession stand.
