Springdale art show
The 20th annual 10-state Exhibition of Artists of Northwest Arkansas, which opens Wednesday at the Arts Center of the Ozarks, 214 S. Main St., Springdale, includes work by 69 artists, including 42 Arkansans.
A public reception and awards ceremony will take place 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the center. Best in Show will receive $1,200, with $700 for second place and $400 for third, plus best-in-category awards. The majority of the works will be for sale, ranging from $100 to $9,000.
Jurors Shannon Mitchell, curator of the Tyson Foods Art Collection; artist John P. Lasater IV of Siloam Springs, and Kenneth Foggo, owner and manager of EureKan Art Gallery in Eureka Springs, chose 100 pieces (out of 385 submitted) in six categories: sculpture/3D, photography/digital art, mixed media/printing, water media, oil and drawing/pastel, for the exhibition, which will remain up through Aug. 29.

Main Street sculpture
Three donors -- the John and Robyn Horn Foundation, the Quapaw Central Business Improvement District No. 5 and Anita Davis, owner of the Esse Purse Museum and the Bernice Garden -- are giving matching gifts totaling $45,000 to studioMAIN.
The money will go toward the downtown nonprofit's Public Arts Master Plan to commission, through a statewide competition, sculptures for display between the 1200 and 1700 blocks of Little Rock's Main Street.
Arkansas artists can submit proposals and compete for three exhibition spaces along the street; the deadline is Dec. 15.

Conductor finalists
The Little Rock Wind Symphony has picked three finalists for the music director position:
• Timothy Oliver, director of bands and coordinator of wind and percussion studies at Arkansas State University, will conduct the ensemble's first masterworks concert Oct. 9.
• Israel Getzov, music director of the Conway Symphony Orchestra and principal conductor of the Tianjin (China) Philharmonic and formerly associate conductor with the Arkansas Symphony; he'll conduct the second concert Feb. 26.
• Shaun R. Popp, assistant director of bands and assistant professor of music education at Henderson State University, will conduct April 23.
A 10-member search committee made up of Wind Symphony musicians and members of the board of directors winnowed the finalists down from applications from qualified conductors from Arkansas and surrounding states. An announcement on the winner will come in May.
The new music director will succeed Karen Fannin, music director since 2006, who announced her resignation in February as she has taken the position of director of bands at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Balanchine 'stamp'
Ballet Arkansas' 2014-15 season will include a performance of George Balanchine's Who Cares?, set to music by George Gershwin, April 17-19 at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Sixth and Main streets, Little Rock.
It'll be the final work on a program with the same title. Ballet Arkansas Artistic Director Michael Bearden says it's the first time the George Balanchine Trust has authorized an Arkansas dance company to perform one of the choreographer's works, noting the trust's "stamp of approval on the growth our company has made."
The company will open the season with its first Visions Choreographic Competition, 7 p.m. Aug. 23 in the Central Arkansas Library System's Ron Robinson Theater, 100 River Market Ave., Little Rock. The concert will feature the work of five choreographers, out of 36 who competed; the winner will receive a commission to create a complete new work for the April show.
Dec. 12-14 will be the annual performances, with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, of Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker at the Maumelle Performing Arts Center, 101 Victory Lane, Maumelle.
