Arkansas fourth in Southern Junior Cup

Arkansas golfers finished fourth in the Southern States Junior Cup which ended Wednesday at Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Oklahoma won its third consecutive championship, finishing with 19 points. Missouri was second with 10 1/2 points, while Mississippi was third with 9 1/2. Arkansas was last in the four-team field with 9.

The teams of Miles Smith-Taylor Loeb, Ian Bellisario-Josie Robertson and Tripp Croom-Christian Barrett won their four-ball matches Tuesday morning.

In Tuesday afternoon's foursome matches, the Smith-Loeb and Connor Neil-Casey Ott teams picked up victories for Arkansas, while Bellisario-Robertson went all square for a half point.

Scoring victories Wednesday in girls singles matches were Arkansas State Golf Association player of the year Elizabeth Moon and Allie Weiner, while Loeb tied Kate Goodwin of Oklahoma in her match for a half point.

ASGA boys player of the year Ryan Spurlock won his match 2 and 1 for the state's final point.

ASU men add guard

Arkansas State Coach John Brady announced the addition of transfer guard Devin Carter to the Red Wolves' program.

Carter, who will sit out the 2014-2015 season because of NCAA transfer rules, played at Kent State and will have two years of eligibility remaining, beginning in 2015-2016.

Carter, 6-4, 210 pounds, averaged 1.9 points, 0.9 rebounds, 0.3 assists and 0.2 steals in 13 games while playing an average of 7.2 minutes for Kent State last season. He spent the 2012-2013 season at Lake Land College in Mattoon, Ill., where he averaged a team-high 17.5 points per game.

ASU men release nonconference schedule

The Arkansas State men's basketball team will open this season by hosting Tennessee-Martin on Nov. 19, one of four nonconference home games, the school announced Thursday.

ASU will also host Lamar on Nov. 25, NAIA Belhaven on Dec. 6 and Marshall on Dec. 20.

The Red Wolves, who went 19-13 last year, will play at Central Arkansas on Dec. 1, at Purdue on Dec. 10, at Toledo on Dec. 13, at Mississippi State on Dec. 17, and at Niagara on Dec. 23.

ASU also will host exhibition games against NCAA Division II Henderson State on Nov. 5 and Southern Arkansas on Nov. 12.

UAM announces Hall of Fame class

Arkansas-Monticello announced its 2014 Sports Hall of Fame class on Thursday.

Angela Meadough, Kevin Parker, Corwin Elliott, Jamie Tucker and David Stover comprise this year's class.

Meadough was a first team All-America basketball player for UAM in 1992. She played two seasons for the Cotton Blossoms (1990-1992). Parker was the starting left tackle for UAM in 1990-1992 and became the school's fourth first-team All-American in 1992 when he anchored the offensive line for a Boll Weevil team that averaged 259.3 rushing yards and 26.4 points per game. Elliott played running back for the Boll Weevils in 1999-2002. He holds or shares 13 individual school records, including career rushing attempts (755), single-season rushing yards (1,616), and career rushing touchdowns (36).

Tucker and Stover starred for UAM's baseball team. Tucker holds the career and single season records for RBI (147 for his career and 60 in 1999). Stover compiled a career ERA of 2.24, a school record, in 1971-1974.

The Hall of Fame induction dinner will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 in the John F. Gibson University Center in Monticello. Tickets are $35 each and may be purchased by calling the UAM Athletic Department at (870) 460-1058.
