As many as 200 new jobs coming to Sumter

SUMTER, S.C. — A tool manufacturer is closing plants in Dallas and in Arkansas meaning jobs in South Carolina.

Several media outlets report Apex Tool Group is closing its Northwest Arkansas plant in Springdale, Arkansas eliminating 250 there jobs by the end of next year. It is also closing its Dallas plant.

The company will be giving workers either a severance package or allowing them to transfer to its Sumter, South Carolina plant which will be hiring as many as 200 workers.

It is the second expansion in Sumter in the past three years. In 2011 the company invested $1.4 million adding 33 jobs at the plant that makes hand tools under the Crescent, Wiss, HK Porter and Xcelite brands.

The global tool manufacturer is headquartered in Maryland.
