News and notes
• Pitcher Ryne Stanek (Arkansas Razorbacks) was placed on the disabled list Wednesday by the Charlotte StoneCrabs (A+ Rays) . StoneCrabs radio broadcaster Gregg Caserta said Stanek has a minor shoulder issue that the team's medical staff is monitoring. "We have some pitching depth now, whereas we were looking for arms a couple of weeks ago," Casserta said. "This was done strictly as a precautionary move."
• Outfielder Forrestt Allday (Central Arkansas) was placed on the disabled list July 27 by the Greenville Drive (A Red Sox) after reaggravating a strained hamstring that put him on the disabled list in early July. "I haven't been given any indcation of a time table [for Allday's return], but considering this is the second time he's hurt it, I'm guessing they'll be very cautious," said Cameron White, the Drive's media relations manager.
• Outfielder Doug Votolato (Central Arkansas) was placed on the 60-day disabled list July 21 by the Texas Rangers organization, two days after being assigned to the rookie league team. Votolato played in two games for the Rangers' short-season Class A affiliate in Spokane, Wash. "We were never positive what his injury was, which was a problem in itself," said Dustin Toms, the Spokane Indians' public relations director. "He was in a walking boot for a while and had heard he broke and/or tore something between his fibula and tibia."
• Pitcher Zach Cates (Conway) was placed on the disabled list Aug. 2 by the Tennessee Smokies (AA Cubs), retroactive to July 31. Smokies radio broadcaster Mick Gillispie said Cates is letting a blister heal and should return to the team shortly.
• Pitcher Duke Welker (Arkansas Razorbacks), who underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery June 5, was designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization July 9 and was subsequently released July 14. Welker, 28, was 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA in 9 appearances for Class AAA Indianapolis this season.
