YANKEES

McCann on concussion list

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees have placed catcher Brian McCann on the seven-day concussion list less than a day after he was hit in the face mask by a foul ball.

McCann was hurt in the third inning Friday night against Cleveland but remained in the game until he was pinch-hit for in the sixth. Manager Joe Girardi said McCann was feeling cloudy.

McCann was examined by a neurologist Saturday morning and placed on the DL. He will have to pass Major League Baseball's concussion protocol before being activated.

Austin Romine was recalled from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill in for McCann.

The Yankees also gave second baseman Brian Roberts his unconditional release. Roberts was hitting .237 with 5 home runs and 21 RBI when he was cut Aug. 1 to make room for infielder Stephen Drew.

Jeter passes Wagner in hits

Derek Jeter has passed Honus Wagner on the career hits list with 3,431 after an infield single in the sixth inning Saturday against the Cleveland Indians.

Jeter led off the inning with a soft grounder off Corey Kluber that shortstop Jose Ramirez charged but failed to pick up with his bare hand. Jeter tied Wagner on Friday night with a grounder that Ramirez made a nice play on, but the throw went off first baseman Carlos Santana's glove as the Yankees captain crossed the base.

Jeter has said this will be his final season so moving up to fifth will be difficult. He needs 84 hits to catch Tris Speaker at 3,515.

MARLINS

Right-hander gets call

CINCINNATI -- Right-hander Brad Penny was called up Saturday by the Miami Marlins, reuniting him with his former team and former catcher 10 years later.

The Marlins picked Penny to start the second game of a series against the Cincinnati Reds. He swapped roster spots with left-hander Edgar Olmos, who was optioned to Class AAA New Orleans.

The 36-year-old pitcher has played for the Marlins, Dodgers, Red Sox, Giants, Cardinals and Tigers. He signed a minor-league deal in June.

Penny went 48-42 with a 4.04 ERA with the Marlins from 2000-04, when Mike Redmond -- the Marlins manager -- was his catcher. He won 14 games on the Marlins team that won the World Series in 2003. His last start for the Marlins was July 28, 2004.

Penny hasn't played in the majors since 2012, when he made 22 relief appearances for the Giants. It was the first time in his career that he didn't make at least one start during a season. His last start in the majors was Sept. 25, 2011, for the Tigers.

"It's been a long road for him," Redmond said. "For me, it will be fun. I caught a lot of his starts. Seeing him on that mound and me managing him, it's kind of big."

RAYS

No regrets over Price

CHICAGO -- Tampa Bay Rays owner Stuart Sternberg said he doesn't regret trading former Cy Young Award winner David Price to the Detroit Tigers.

Sternberg said before Saturday's game against the Chicago Cubs that the one regret he could think of as an owner was when Tampa Bay didn't add a hitter during the 2010 season.

He doesn't have any second thoughts about the three-team trade July 31 that sent Price to Detroit. The Rays acquired left-hander Drew Smyly (Arkansas Razorbacks, Little Rock Central) and minor-league shortstop Willy Adames from the Tigers along with infielder Nick Franklin from the Seattle Mariners.

For Sternberg and the Rays, moves like that are what the small-market franchise has to do to stay competitive, even if it means sending away stars.

REDS

Barnhart called up

CINCINNATI -- The Reds called up catcher Tucker Barnhart from Class AA Louisville on Saturday, giving them another option with Brayan Pena limited by a sore left hamstring.

Pena left a 2-1 loss to the Marlins on Friday night after getting a single and having the hamstring tighten.

Barnhart played in 12 games, including nine starts, during three stints with the Reds earlier this season. His last appearance for Cincinnati was July 10 against the Cubs.

Lutz had two stints with the Red, starting five games at first base, two in left field and one as the designated hitter. Lutz batted .212 in 18 games overall.

NATIONALS

Werth out of lineup

ATLANTA -- Outfielder Jayson Werth has been scratched from the Nationals' lineup as he continues to be slowed by a sore right ankle and right shoulder.

Werth was listed in Manager Matt Williams' original lineup in right field for Saturday night's game against the Braves but instead was held out for the second straight game.

Williams said Friday that Werth was "pretty banged up" and has battled the sore shoulder for more than a week.

The Nationals had no immediate update on Werth's status when they announced the lineup change. Bryce Harper moved from left field to right field. Kevin Frandsen entered the lineup in left field in Williams' revised lineup.

Williams said outfielder Steven Souza was feeling better Saturday after hurting his shoulder Friday night in a collision with the right-field wall.
