DERMOTT -- Dermott's attempt to control juvenile crime by punishing parents got mixed reviews Wednesday, with some residents saying high unemployment and a lack of recreational facilities for teenagers needed to be addressed. James Stephens, a Dermott-area farmer, said he's lived in the area for 30 years and has seen the economy steadily deteriorate. The lack of employment opportunities for Dermott's teenagers won't be changed by the new city ordinance, he said. Giving teens jobs and recreational opportunities will solve the problem of juveniles in the streets, he said. "If you've got a few nickels in your pockets and job to go to, you'll feel good about yourself," Stephens said. "If you're broke, you'll want to throw rocks at your own shadow to have something to do." Police Chief Jerry Melton said the town had been extremely quiet since the City Council passed the law during an emergency meeting Saturday afternoon.

CONWAY -- Transportation for the elderly in Conway and Faulkner County is in jeopardy because of a recent $32,000 cut in federal funding for the Faulkner County Senior Citizens Program. The agency, which provides Meals on Wheels as well as individual and group transportation for roughly 1,800 senior citizens countywide, is scrambling to make up for the reduction. It plans to ask the Conway City Council this evening for an additional $18,177 in city funds.
