Lawrence County votes against hosting state prison

WALNUT RIDGE — Officials in a northeast Arkansas county have decided they don't want to host a proposed state prison.

The Jonesboro Sun reported that the Lawrence County Quorum Court voted 5-4 on Monday to not submit an application to the Arkansas Department of Correction to host a proposed $100 million prison.

The state Correction Department has given communities until Oct. 24 to submit paperwork if they want to host the new prison. Officials say the prison is needed to accommodate the fast-growing inmate population.

The agency hopes to have a proposal when it goes to the state lawmakers next year to ask for funding to build it.
