A house in North Little Rock is considered a total loss after a fire Tuesday.
Spokesman Capt. John Pflasterer said the department was called to 1245 Kierre Loop about noon.
He said residents were inside the home at the time of the fire, but they got out before firefighters arrived.
The cause remained under investigation while firefighters worked to douse lingering, smoldering hot spots, but it appeared the fire started on the back deck, officials said.
Pflasterer said a husband and wife were home when they heard a crash. The man went out back and found the deck on fire. He attempted to extinguish it on his own, Pflasterer said.
"But it was just too much," he said. "It grew and he called us."
Neither of the residents was injured and the flames were contained to the one home, though vinyl siding on a neighboring house did suffer heat damage. Two cats from the destroyed home were still missing about an hour after the fire started.
"We hope to find them alive and well," Pflasterer said.
